Although best known for their energetic performances of Celtic and Americana tunes, laurel and the lads additionally liberates classic rock standards into new aural experiences. Formed as a Celtic band in 1997, this diverse group of musicians brought with them eclectic tastes in music that have pushed the boundaries of your typical Irish bands. The band has electrified audiences from the Carolinas to County Down with their performances of this music.
The band members are Laurel Weston (bass, penny whistles), Freeman Smith (harmonica), Anne Stafford (Celtic harp, keyboard, vocals), Chris Wilkerson (guitar), Michael Ferguson (mandolin, guitar), Elaine Lang (percussion) and Foster Kennedy (drums). We were born with rock and roll...The year Bill Haley Rocked Around the Clock - we rolled into the world. Growing up with rock and roll (the folk music of our generation) and traditional music, provides the band with the background for a fierce blend of musical styles that defines their sound. They count musicians as diverse as The Pogues, The Rolling Stones, Miles Davis, Little Walter, Peter Gabriel and U2 as their heros.
Recent performances include The Spartanburg International Festival, Shamrocks on the Square, Spartanburg County Music Foundation’s “Music Sandwiched In” concert series, An Evening at the State Museum for the Columbia Irish Hibernian Society, and the annual Spartanburg “A Dickens of a Christmas” celebration. Over the last several years, we have routinely been entertaining music lovers at the Guitar Bar and Wasabi Japanese Restaurant. Other playdates have included Cafe Ishi, Nacho Mama's, Barnes & Noble, Java Jive and The Whiskery Saloon – other area restaurants, cafes or bars. Performing in such a diverse range of venues has allowed us to tailor our performances to engage and excite all ages of music lovers and provide a toe-tapping good time for all.
